Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my .md file not open with Skill Reader by default?
macOS remembers whichever app you last set as the Markdown handler. Open Skill Reader, go through the onboarding prompt, and set Skill Reader as your default Markdown app. You can also right-click any .md file in Finder, choose Get Info, select Skill Reader under "Open with", and click "Change All".
The Space-key preview isn't showing my Markdown rendered.
The QuickLook extension may need to be enabled after first launch. Open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security > Extensions > Quick Look, and make sure Skill Reader is turned on. Then restart Finder (Option-right-click the Finder icon in the Dock > Relaunch) and try pressing Space again.
How do I export a .md file to PDF?
Press Space on the .md file in Finder to open the QuickLook preview. Click the Share button at the top-right of the window and choose Export with Skill Reader. Pick PDF (or HTML / PNG / JPG) and save it wherever you like.
Can I change the theme or use my own CSS?
Yes. Skill Reader ships with several built-in themes (GitHub, Notion, Dark, Newspaper, and more). You can also import a custom CSS file from the app's Preferences.
Does Skill Reader work offline?
Yes. Skill Reader renders every file locally on your Mac. No internet connection is required, and your files are never uploaded anywhere.
Which file types are supported?
Skill Reader handles standard Markdown files with the extensions .md, .markdown, .mdown, .mkd, and .mkdn. GitHub-Flavored Markdown (GFM), code blocks, tables, task lists, footnotes, and math are all supported.
How do I request a refund?
Refunds for Mac App Store purchases are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, and request a refund for your Skill Reader purchase.
